MANILA, Philippines – Celebrities from around the globe took to social media to express sympathy and offer support to the Philippines, which suffered devastation due to super typhoon Yolanda, which made landfall in the country Friday, November 8.
Yolanda, international name Haiyan, is said to be one of the strongest typhoons in recent history. The super typhoon left an estimate of at least 10,000 casualties in the provinces of Leyte, Samar, and many other parts of the Visayas.
Posts from Hollywood artists, international musicians and sportsmen alike appeared on social media after the storm headlined in news around the world.
The Miss Universe 2013 coronation night held November 10 (MNL) in Moscow, Russia was dedicated to the victims of Yolanda in the Philippines and Vietnam.
Pope Francis also used his official Twitter account @pontifex to ask for unity in prayer for the Philippines.

In their official website, NBA’s Miami HEAT coach Erik Spoelstra offered prayers and condolences.
“On behalf of the Miami HEAT organization, we would like to extend our condolences to the victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. We value the many fans that we have over there, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”
Korean star Lee Min Ho, who visited the Philippines earlier this year used Facebook to send his thoughts.
During the MTV Europe Music Awards held November 10 in Amsterdam, Jared Leto of American rock band 30 Seconds to Mars offered a minute of silence for the Yolanda victims.
On Tuesday, November 12, Grammy-winning Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias, whose mother is from the Philippines, urged his fans to give money to help victims of the devastating Typhoon Haiyan.
“HELP THE PHILIPPINES! People in the Philippines need our help right away! Please consider donating to Haiyan disaster relief. You’ll feel good that you did,” the 38-year-old wrote on his official websitebeside a link to the web page of the American Red Cross.
